And now...

...further proof that the world is out to get me.

The Discovery Channel has been running a marathon of kickass Mythbusters episodes all day long, on the day I planned to get lots of worky work done.

Ugh.

I am weak to Jamie Hyneman's walrus moustache. As well as fun science.

Trunked like an elephant

Tonight I trunked 29 stories.

Trunking, for the unaware, is the process of putting a story hidden away for an indefinite amount of time--the idea of it being forever, of course. There is always a moment though that happens years down the line where one might consider pulling the dusty metaphoric trunk out, popping it open, and seeing if anything good inside is salvageable.

Anyways, most of these pieces have just been sitting around. They haven't gone out to a market in some time, represent my struggles with writing, and just aren't anything I'm overly concerned with getting out there. I am fairly content with my done stories at the moment, and I'm sure newer, hopefully better works will be materializing at some point.

So, yeah. Trunking.

Unless any of you can think of a perfect place to send a dialogue-only story involving two old men discussing the pros and cons of vampires over afternoon tea? I still kinda like that one.

Some progess, other stuff

The Streets of the City

All's been quiet here in Wistful Writings land, but that does not mean all is quiet elsewhere. Got some work done on the above story over the past week. Not much, but some. I also seemed to have finished a piece of creepy flash fiction called "The Unfilled" the other night. And that novel that I'm not talking about? Well, it's still moving forward, even if it's slower than a dying turtle on the run.

Will probably have a review of Jo Walton's Tooth and Claw up soon. I'm also reading the latest entry in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword and Sorceress series. Some excellent tales so far.

But I really don't see myself getting much done for the next two weeks. The day job has come in swiftly and kicked my ill-prepared butt. So, enjoy the silence.

Three movies, one man

Writing with a headache is nearly impossible. So, here are the latest movies I've checked out.

Ratatouille. The juxtaposition of a rat wanting to work in a kitchen—a place where the sight of a single furry, four-pawed body scurrying around means eminent restaurant-death—is more than enough to base a Pixar film on. So we have a rat that can cook, a boy that can't, and a restaurant to be saved from the likes of a vulture (also known as Anton Ego). It's a lot of fun, with colorful characters, food that looks realistic, and several laugh-out-loud moments. I was surprised at how fast the plot moved, and overall enjoyed it very much. Definitely a winner and a huge step up from 2006's Cars.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Haven't watched this since I was in high school, and I am happy to report that, much like a fine wine, this comedic gem has only gotten better and better. Really, if for some strange reason you haven't seen it, please do so. Soonish. And bring me a shrubbery!

Blood Diamond. A dramatic thriller that has two men on the search for a blood diamond during the Sierra Leone Civil War. These are the sort mined in war zones and then sold to finance the conflicts. It's a very powerful film, often even hard to watch at times. We're shown a country that survives on brutality, child soldiers, and the power of control. Even Danny Archer (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) begins to actually see the devastation happening all around. Unfortunately for him—and many others—it's too late to change anything. Much like Hotel Rwanda and those infomercials that come on at three in the morning, this is a film that tries to shed light on subjects often ignored. Will it, ultimately, change anything? I have my doubts. But there's always hope because I can't think of a scarier thing than a country and its people co-existing with Civil War. Well, maybe a little boy with a M-4 assault rifle...

I'm a bird in your hand

No writing tonight. My brain is mush, and I'm extra sleepy. In truth, I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing with "After Effects." It's really just a distraction from another project I'm not quite ready to talk about yet.

There's this cool storm brewing outside. I'm basically just sitting here listening to it growl and crack in the distance. I love it. Rain, soon. I feel like an old geezer with a bad hip acting up, but it's coming. I can feel it. I only wish the storm actually made things cooler here. It's been hot and humid and oh-so-sticky all day long that I just want to pass out and leave it all behind.

I'm trying to save up for an iPod. My sister got me the iPod Shuffle when I graduated college and it's been my BFF ever since. Unfortunately, I think it's time to upgrade. I want more space, and I want more songs. The video iPod (80GB) looks really cool though it's the most pricey of the bunch. I wouldn't be upset with a (30GB), but if I'm gonna pick that one I might as well go for the gold. Anyone got some suggestions? Are the Nanos no longer cool? Also, I'm sticking with Apple as I do like using iTunes so don't tell me about some generic brand like uMusic or whatever. I won't hear of it. I won't!

Doo doo dah

Allow me to direct you to Paul Jessup's blog where he is working on a novel and posting it as it happens. There's progress notes and rough drafts and musing. It's fantasy, with an interesting set of characters and magic. I'm enjoying it so far, and think it's a very neat way to go about showing off his work. Anyways, check it out. The novel's called Dust.

One day, I might do something like this. One day though. Not today or tomorrow. Sometime down the line.

Oh, and I got this in the mail today:

Nice!

To blame!

I blame the lack of substantial updates on the fact that I've gotten back into the habit of heavily playing Final Fantasy XII. I'm at the point where my next destination is the big and final battle, which means I'm trying to complete as much of the sidequests as I can before I head into the unknown. Hmm...I have about 20 or so hunts left to do, seven Espers still to find, fight, and conquer, and a small number of random quests for those extra hard-to-find weapons. I really do love this game.

Anyways, actual content forthcoming.

Nuffin'

No writing yesterday and probably no writing tonight. I do not believe the Muse has vanished. More like the Busy has taken residence in my head for a bit. Please leave all forms of sympathy, mockery, and cheese sandwiches in the comment field below.
